Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why are thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces so important?

A: We believe that our physical spaces have the capacity to elevate our lives, and hold space for meaningful connection. We want people to enjoy being in their spaces, alone with a good book, together with family, friends, and neighbors. Spaces that are integrated and essential to our daily lives serve us best when they allow us to feel connected to each other and to our place in the world.

Q: What types of clients do you take on?

A: We believe that large and small spaces deserve the same level of quality, care and intention. We are prepared to serve individuals and organizations at any scale from residential gardens and small urban parks, to large rural estates and working landscapes.

Q: You focus on garden spaces that encourage biodiversity - why?

A: A biodiverse garden is an act of hope. Our landscapes serve us best when they create an opportunity to slow down, to pay attention, to embrace curiosity and wonder. Gardens that offer habitat, encourage biodiversity, and contribute ecologically will invite wildlife, birds and pollinators right to our doorstep. When our children mingle with the natural world in the dappled shade of an old tree, we are teaching them care, participation and engagement with the world around them.

Q: Gardens are dynamic living entities that change over time. How do you keep a garden pristine?

A: You don’t! Gardens aren’t meant to always be nice and neat. When we design for longevity, our landscapes evolve with us, encouraging us to find beauty in the reflection of changing seasons, in softer edges and weathered wood. Gardens are rooted in place and time - there’s magic that comes with age.

Q: What makes Outcrop different?

A: Most domestic and public landscapes prioritize water hungry lawns and plants that don’t contribute to local ecology or biodiversity. We put native plants front and center, often combining with plants from similar climates around the world. We are committed to radically transforming the way we create the built environment; collaborating with clients, architects, builders and laborers to realize spaces that are well crafted, ecologically productive and artfully designed.
